National Doctors’ Day 2025 in India: Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy

Every year on July 1, India observes National Doctors’ Day to celebrate the remarkable legacy of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy — a legendary physician, freedom fighter, academic, and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. Since its inception in 1991, the day marks both his birth and death anniversaries, symbolizing a life wholly dedicated to medicine and nation-building.

🩺 A Journey of Grit and Greatness

According to CME India, Dr. Roy’s path to success wasn’t easy. Gaining admission to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London required immense perseverance — he had to meet the Dean 30 times before being accepted. Once admitted, he went on to achieve the rare feat of clearing both the MRCP (Medicine) and FRCS (Surgery) exams in just 2 years and 3 months — a record-breaking accomplishment for any Indian at the time.

🏙️ Architect of Modern Bengal

Dr. Roy also played a pivotal role in shaping Bengal’s urban and industrial landscape. He played a key role in founding five major cities—Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashoknagar, and Habra—reshaping the region’s development landscape.

🌹 A Symbol of Sacrifice

On National Doctors’ Day, the red carnation — a symbol of love and sacrifice — is traditionally worn to honor the unwavering commitment of medical professionals who often put others’ needs before their own.
